Exhibitions and events across King’s celebrate students’ creativity

Throughout the academic year events and exhibitions highlight the creative talents and diverse perspectives of students from across the cultural community at King’s.


More than 400 King’s students from the GKT School of Medical Education within the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine took part in Thinking Outside the Box, joining creative learning sessions to enhance their clinical skills and their approach to patient care. The sessions took place during the extended GP practice placement that forms part of their course. Creative breakout sessions featuring ceramics, photography, graphic art, poetry and art history were hosted by professional artists alongside clinical educators and student tutors. Inspired by the workshops, one project team used first-person accounts to compose haikus reflecting patient experiences at Rushey Green Group Practice in south-east London. In a blog for Care Opinion the students said, ‘we have found that one of the most valuable lessons has in fact been acknowledging the diversity of people’s experiences.’


King’s PhD students also worked alongside artists and creatives to explore ways to connect broader audiences with their research findings through the university’s Collaborative Scheme for Early Career Researchers.


The programme supports researchers in establishing relationships with cultural sector or technology industry partners that help address the challenge of generating impact beyond academia.

It leads to a showcase exhibition in the Inigo Rooms in the university’s Cultural Quarter, which features eight collaborations from the programme.


Narrating Plasticity led by Benjamin Dalton from the Department of French in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities was one of those showcased. Benjamin collaborated with ceramics artist Amanda Doidge and neuroscientists from the Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. Together, they explored overlaps between the malleability of a plastic artwork and the plasticity of the brain to help reconnect current neuroscience with its artistic and sculptural roots.


Across King’s, arts and culture offer a new lens through which to explore academic work from a range of faculties. A Student Photography Showcase in the Exchange and the Arcade at Bush House provided students from the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy with an opportunity to share a snapshot of their research into global communities. Photographs featured in the collection include shots of the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, the experiences of communities living at the US-Mexico border and urban development in Hong Kong.

Haiku published on Patient Experience as Poetry, Care Opinion

This task drew me back into the crux of medicine. Overall, our project raised awareness of not only the inspiring resilience and creativity of patients, but also the complex feelings patients can have.
